Mold Free Home Building Questions Answered

Mold-free home building questions answered with Architect Cheryl Ciecko

You guys sent in some really great questions for our free event “Avoiding Mold In Home Building”. I had many I didn’t get to, so I’m answering them in this video!

Many of you already know me, but if you don’t, I’m Cheryl Ciecko; Architect, Founder of AvoidingMold.com and a mold and water damage expert. The latter came about after my own family dealt with mold illness in more than one moldy home.

That’s why I’m on a mission to teach as many homeowners (and mold-aware building pros!) how to safely deal with mold, and more importantly, how to avoid the building defects that cause mold and build safe, healthy homes!

In this video, we’ll talk about:

  • Mold and moisture content in lumber
  • Pier foundation options (pre-cast, metal, waterproofing)
  • Short crawlspace design and site drainage
  • Sils and pressure treated wood for chemical sensitivies
  • Heat pumps to power radiator
  • Where to place French Drains around your property
  • What to spray on moldy lumber to clean it
  • Can you travel with mold sensitivies?
  • Where to find mold-aware healthy home builders
  • Metal roofs vs shingles; which roof is better?
  • Do you always need a rainscreen?
  • Best windows and how to avoid leaks
  • What are the weaknesses and cons of pre-fab homes?
  • Are wood frame homes better factory or stick built?
  • Are mini splits safe or will they always have mold?
  • Will painting shellac on exterior walls cause mold?
  • Condensation issues in Barndominiums
  • How to condition storage structures in the Deep South
  • Are whole home zip systems worth the money?
  • How to hire reliable mold remediators
  • How to find the equilibrium in your home

The cost of a house is a lot of money. What it costs for this course is a tiny percentage if you can avoid spending up to $50,000 on remediation down the road because something was overlooked.

I’ve been doing this for over 20 years, researching this stuff to save my own family. And I it’s now my mission to help other people know as much as they can possibly know so they don’t have to go through what I went through. So that’s what my mission is. Thank you for being here!
