How To Protect Your Home From Mold During The Remediation Process

How To Setup DIY Containment For Mold Remediation

Today I want to talk about something critical that many people overlook when doing mold remediation or construction work: proper containment.

Whether you’re dealing with mold, opening up walls for construction, or removing contaminated materials, you absolutely must protect the rest of your home from the spaces where work is happening.

The good news is: you don’t need to hire a professional containment company to do this. You can set it up yourself with materials from any big box store.

I’ve actually done my own containment before remediators arrived—and then had them add their own layer on top. It’s not complicated, it’s not expensive, and it makes a huge difference in protecting your family and your home.

In this video, I explain:

  • The exact materials you need (and where to buy them)
  • Why 6-9 mil polyethylene plastic is essential—and how to properly attach it to walls, ceilings, and floors
  • How to install a “zipper door” using zippers (yes, actual zippers!) for controlled access
  • The critical concept of double containment and why it matters
  • How to create a vestibule system (like an airlock) to prevent cross-contamination
  • Why your outer layer of plastic gets contaminated and how to safely remove it
  • How to use air scrubbers with negative pressure to exhaust toxins outside
  • Why even a teenager can help with this project

The bottom line? Proper containment keeps mold spores, construction debris, and other contaminants from spreading throughout your home. It protects your family’s health and prevents the need to remediate your entire house because of one problem area.
