Does Mold Resistant Drywall Work? What Homeowners Need To Know

Does Mold Resistant Drywall Work?

Understanding Moisture-Resistant, Paperless Drywall, MGO board, green board and more.

I want to clear up some confusion about water-resistant drywall products—you’ve probably heard terms like “green board,” “paperless drywall,” and “mold-resistant drywall” thrown around, but what do they actually mean?

Here’s something critical to understand right from the start: no drywall product is mold-proof or waterproof, and the manufacturers themselves don’t claim that they are. These materials are mold-resistant, and there’s a big difference.

In this video I wanted to clear up some misconceptions and discuss:

  • Why mold grows on traditional drywall (hint: it’s all about that paper facing)
  • The difference between green board, paperless drywall, and regular drywall
  • How moisture-resistant drywall actually works
  • The pros and cons of these materials, including cost considerations
  • Why even “mold-resistant” products can fail if they get saturated
  • Important limitations you need to know before installation

Watch the full video to learn more about these materials and how they can fit into a mold prevention strategy:

The best strategy? Prevent mold from growing in the first place by controlling moisture. But if you’re building or renovating and have the budget for upgraded materials, understanding these options can help you make informed decisions. Stay informed out there!
