Do NOT Accept Moldy Lumber

Moldy Lumber Don't Accept it in your new home build

Don’t assume your building materials will arrive in top quality condition. Specify it in writing!

I’m seeing a lot of photos from homeowners with moldy or poor-quality lumber and materials that absolutely should NOT be in a new building.

Be very specific about what’s acceptable and what isn’t. If materials arrive damaged or moldy send them back! Just like you would with any damaged package.

In this video, I’ll cover:

  • Why lumber and material grades matter (and why they vary so much in price)
  • What specifications are and why they’re critical to your project
  • Inspecting deliveries and rejecting poor-quality materials (yes, you can send them back!)
  • The importance of having both verbal and written agreements
  • Red flags: what natural staining looks like versus damage
  • Lumber grades: how to specify exactly what grade you want
  • Why hiring an architect to review your contracts is worth the investment
  • AIA contracts: why they protect both owner and builder equally

Your contract is your most powerful tool for ensuring the quality of your new home. Use it.

I included a whole section on contracts and communicating with your building team in my “Building A Safe Home” program.
