Understanding Duct Cleaning: A Personal and Professional Journey
As a licensed architect with over 30 years of experience, I never expected that a routine continuing education course would completely change my understanding of building health. But when I attended a session on mold in commercial buildings, it coincided with my own child’s struggle with asthma and migraines at age 10. What I learned that day – and what I discovered in my own home’s ducts afterward – would transform both my personal and professional approach to building health.
In “Get Your Ducts In A Row – PART 1” of my conversation with the Mold Matters podcast, I share my story and dive into the complex world of duct cleaning. We discuss the good, the bad, and yes, even the scams I’ve encountered along the way. I’ll explain why new construction might need duct cleaning more than older buildings, what really constitutes effective duct cleaning, and how poor practices can actually make problems worse.
Whether you’re a homeowner wondering if you should get your ducts cleaned, a building professional looking to expand your knowledge, or someone dealing with unexplained health issues, this conversation offers practical insights from my decades of experience – both as a concerned parent and as an architect.

Join me as I share what I’ve learned about what’s really hiding in our ducts and what we can do about it.
A special thank you to Jeremy Evans and Mike Adams for having me back on the Mold Matters podcast to discuss this important topic.
